We are proud that Knight Aerospace has received the latest AS9100D certification for the third year in a row. It’s part of our overall commitment to diligent quality assurance and the highest standards for our military medical module and palletized aerospace products.
The AS9100D certification is an international quality management standard for the rigorous requirements of the aerospace industry. Because AS9100D adds to the standards already required by ISO 9001, let’s take a look at both.
Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), ISO 9001 specifies requirements for a Quality Management System (QMS) in the manufacturing and service industries. This QMS creates specific standards used to measure identify, measure, and improve products and services to meet the requirements of both customers and regulations. More than one million organizations from more than 160 countries have applied the ISO 9001 standard requirements to their QMS. (If you want to take a deep dive, read Seven Quality Management Principles behind ISO 9001 requirements.)
ISO 9001 is such a fundamental and influential standard that the aerospace industry took it further with AS9100D. This certification is not easily achieved, but it’s essential for companies like us in the aviation, space, and defense arena. With it, we are subject to annual compliance audits by third-party certifying bodies.
Our continuing certification is necessary for us to best serve our customers without interference. In addition to ISO 9001:2015 and AS9100D standards, we also raise the bar on quality across the board. That is thanks to the conscientious work of the Knight Aerospace Quality Department, headed by Daniel Serna, our Quality Assurance Manager.
Dan joined Knight Aerospace in July of 1994, one of our longest-tenured employees. This brings him a unique perspective and insight into our company.
“From its start, Knight Aerospace has believed that ensuring the quality of our products and services is the responsibility of all of our employees—we have come a long way from basing our quality system on Mil-I-45208 to being AS9100 registered,” Dan said. “My primary objective and responsibility is to guarantee that we meet or exceed the expectations of our customers by instilling those objectives and responsibilities in our employees, contractors, and vendors. We all understand how important we are to our total quality.”
As Knight innovates new products for the industry, like the Next Generation ATGL and the Aeromedical Bio-Containment Module (ABCM), the quality team will continue to expand to cover these exciting new challenges.
